Two candidates are in place for the special election in the 6th Metro Council District–independent Deonte Hollowell, who currently holds the seat, and Democrat David James. The county GOP will meet to select a candidate Tuesday.

Hollowell is a professor at the University of Louisville. James is the former president of the local Fraternal Order of Police and currently works on U of L’s police force.

If either Hollowell stays in office or if James wins, they will join President Tom Owen (D-8) as the only U of L employees on the council (Owen is an archivist at the University).

If James wins, he will be the second law enforcement officer to serve on the council. The late George Melton was the first.

Hollowell is among several doctors (medical, juris or PhD) on the council.
