Kimberly Bunton resigned from the job just over two years ago after the Courier-Journal raised questions about some two-thousand dollars in low-income assistance that her mother received from the city while Bunton headed the department.

Both Bunton and her mother, Vicki Smallwood, are charged with two felony counts each of theft by unlawful taking over $300.

The crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
