Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock may declare his candidacy for the U.S. Senate later this month, drawing incumbent Republican Richard Lugar into a primary next year.

According to an e-mail sent by a Republican Party official and obtained by the Washington Post, Mourdock is planning to announce his candidacy on the 22nd.

Senators Mitch McConnell, Jim Bunning, Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh all supported the tax cut compromise.

The compromise cleared the Senate 81-19. Among other things, it calls for a 2-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts (all of them) and a 13-month extension of unemployment benefits.

From WFPL’s Rick Howlett and the AP:

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says he won’t be making a decision soon on whether to run for President.

Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana said this week that he’ll urge Daniels to run, but Daniels says Lugar didn’t encourage him to run during a discussion the two had Thursday. Daniels says he talked with Lugar for more than an hour and discussed world affairs.

Daniels said in February that he would keep an open mind about a presidential run. He told reporters Friday that he isn’t doing things a presidential contender typically does, but that he hasn’t closed the door on the possibility.
