Here is audio of Third District Congressman John Yarmuth talking with reporters about the goals of the lame duck Congress and his thoughts on his third term. Highlights include a discussion of whether Yarmuth’s decision to campaign on the Democratic Party’s legislative successes was the right strategy. He says it is, because he won. But WHAS’s Joe Arnold says some Democrats are upset about it.

I’m so tired of Democrats running away from their principles and from their accomplishments every election. Rather than making a strong case for their policies, they cave, which in the short term makes them look unprincipled, and in the long term concedes the argument to the GOP. In an election that repudiated BOTH parties (GOP popularity with voters was just as bad as Dems, but the Dems happened to be in power), it isn’t about turning your back on your policies, it’s about explaining to voters that they are better off now than they were. Just to name a few:
1) no arbitrary retroactive credit card rate hikes
2) no health care denied because of prior medical issues
3) Children able to stay on parents’ health care plans until 26
4) expanded hate crime legislation to protect GLBT individuals
5) an economic recovery package that prevented our economy from imploding
Good for Yarmuth for standing up for what he believes in. We could use a few more Yarmuths, and fewer Blanche Lincolns, in Congress as a whole.
